How to Pick the Right Preschool.
When your child is ready for preschool, the process of finding the right school can be both challenging and exciting. Studies have shown that early childhood education is incredibly important in helping your son or daughter develop and be successful, not just in elementary school but over the course of his or her life. This guide is designed to help you understand what a quality preschool program can offer your child and how to weigh your options.
Why Preschool is Important
At this age, children are growing rapidly. A quality preschool program can help them develop their blossoming communication skills, learn to make friends, try new activities, and make choices. Tasks such as helping set the table for snack time teach children how to take care of each other and themselves. They will learn how to interact with others and will try new methods of play and creativity. All of these experiences teach them important emotional, social, and motor skills. These skills build a foundation that will help them be successful in kindergarten and beyond.
Looking at Schools
The key to making this process easier and more informative is to be methodical as you research different schools. It’s a good idea to start the process early, because space is often limited. You will want to plan enough time to visit several schools. Reading a school’s website and talking to other parents can be great research tools, but be sure to visit the school in person before enrolling your child there. This will give you the opportunity to observe teacher-student interactions and to evaluate activities and class size. Many parents will visit twice – the first time by themselves and the second time with their child. This allows you to make some key observations and ask questions, and then you can bring your child in once you have a feel for the program. When your child visits, observe how he or she interacts with teachers and students. Do they seem comfortable in the space?
Educational Philosophies
Many early education programs adopt a particular approach to learning. It is worth researching the various philosophies such as Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Waldorf, to determine what might be the right fit for your child. What learning platform will provide the best foundation for your child to be successful academically and in life? What role does the teacher play in setting that foundation? Are students taught what they “need to know,” or are they encouraged to learn through exploration and play? What is your anticipated role as the parent? How does the school measure success for its students?
Additional Questions to Ask
As you look at different schools, it can be helpful to know what you’re looking for and have a list of questions to ask the teachers and staff. You will want to ask about teaching techniques, staff qualifications, and how the school handles discipline. What training and education do staff members have? What is the turnover rate for teachers? You can also learn a great deal about the school by observing a preschool class in action. Do the teachers seem happy, excited, engaged – or bored? What does a school day look like? Once your child enrolls, note how they change after attending school. The first days and even weeks leaving home are always an adjustment, but after the initial transition period has passed, consider if they come home excited to return and to learn more? Or are they anxious about going back? Be aware of what your child’s needs are, and be honest with yourself and the school if something isn’t working.
When choosing the right preschool for your child, trust your instincts as a parent. A school that isn’t flexible with your work schedule or with your child’s needs might not work. If your child seems unhappy in the environment, continue looking for a better fit. By doing your research and knowing what questions to ask, this process can be rewarding for you and your child by finding a program that fosters curiosity, growth, and excitement for learning.
